Citizenship Examination Exceptions
“50/20” Exception - If you are 50 or older and have been a permanent resident for at least 20 years.
“55/15” Exception- If you are 55 or older and have been a permanent resident for at least 15 years.
“65/20” Exception- If you are 65 or older and have been a permanent resident for at least 20 years you will be given special consideration regarding the civics requirement.
***Note: Instead of studying all 128 civics questions, qualifying applicants are only required to study the 20 questions that have been marked with an asterisk (*) found at the end of each question. Applicants who qualify for the 65/20 special consideration are exempt from the English requirements and may take the civics test in the language of their choice.***
Other
Medical Exception- If you are unable to comply with these requirements because of a physical or developmental disability or a mental impairment, submit form N-648, Medical Certification for Disability Exceptions.
Continuous Residence Exceptions- If you are engaged in certain kinds of overseas employment you may be eligible for the exception to the continuous residence requirements.
